What is genital HPV infection?

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). There are more than 40 HPV types that can infect the genital areas of men and women, including the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), and anus, and the linings of the vagina, cervix, and rectum. Unfortunately, most people who get infected with HPV do not develop symptoms so that they do not even know they have it.

Fact: According to US data, at least 50% of sexually active people will get genital HPV.

What are the symptoms and potential consequences of HPV?

While most infections clear on their own, some infections persist and can lead to serious diseases. Certain types of HPV can cause genital warts in both men and women while other HPV types can cause cervical cancer and other less common cancers such as those of vulva, vagina, anus, and penis, as well as head and neck cancer.

Genital warts usually appear as a small bump or groups of bumps in the genital area. They can be small or large, raised or flat, or shaped like a cauliflower. Health care providers can diagnose warts by looking at the genital area during an office visit. Warts can appear within weeks or months after sexual contact with an infected partner-even if the infected partner has no signs of genital warts. If left untreated, genital warts might go away, remain unchanged, or even increased in size or number. They will not turn into cancer.

In rare cases, a woman with genital HPV can pass it to her baby while giving birth vagina. The child may then develop warts in the throat or voice box. This condition is called recurrent respiratory papilomatosis.

Facts: Worldwide, 493,243 women are diagnose with cervical cancer every year. In the Philippines, around 12 Filipinas die from the disease everyday. Worldwide, an estimated 32,000,000 new cases of genital warts occur each year.

How does one acquire HPV?

Anyone who has ever had genital contact with another person can have genital HPV. Both men and women can get it-and pass it on-without even realizing it. Since the virus can be ‘silent’ for a long time, a person can have genital HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex.

Most sexually active people get genital HPV. You’re most likely to get hnital HPV if you have sex in an early age, multiple sex partners, or sex partner who has multiple partners.

More important information about HPV

·   There is no treatment for genital HPV itself. Most of the time, though, your body fights off the virus on its own. Even men and women, even after genital warts are treated, the virus may remain in the body. This means that you may still pass HPV to your sex partners.

Now is the time to help fight HPV before it happens to you.

The only sure way to prevention from HPV infection is abstinence. Condom may lower the risk of developing HPV-related diseases such as genital warts and cervical cancer but HPV can still infect the areas not covered b a condom.

People can also lower their chances of getting HPV by being in a faithful relationship with once partner; limiting their number of sex partners; and choosing a partner who has had no or fex sex partners. But even people with only one lifetime sex partner can get HPV. And it may not be possible to determine if a partner who has been sexually active in the part is currently infected.

Women should get regular Pap tests to check for changes in the cervix. The Pap test is used to screen for cervical cancer. Changes that are caught early can be treated before the lead to cancer.

Vaccination is an important part of helping to protect yourself from diseases caused by HPV. HPV vaccines have been approved b the Philippine FPA to protect against some of the common types of HPV.

Girls and women: Two vaccines (bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines) are available to protect against most genital warts and vulvar cancers.

Boys and men: The qudrivalent HPV vaccine protects males against most genital warts and other HPV related diseases.

The best time to get vaccinated is prior to HPV exposure. One can get infected with HPV during the first sexual contact. It is also possible to get HPV even if sexual contact happens only one time.

However, individuals who are sexually active or those who may have been infected with an HPV type targeted b the vaccine can still benefit from vaccnination. This is because few individuals may be infected with all HPV types covered b the vaccine. Thus they would still get protection from those types they have not yet been exposed to.

Vaccination should only be donw upon consultation with and recommendation by  a doctor. Talk to a doctor. It’s the responsible thing to do for yourself and your future.

Get the facts about vaccination to help protect yourself against cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers and diseases.

These questions can help you start the conversation with a doctor:

What are my options when it comes to vaccination and other ways of preventing HPV-related cancers and diseases?
What can you tell me about the benefits , risks, and safety of HPV vaccination?

What are the benefits of vaccinating against two types of HPV and of vaccinating against four types of HPV?

If I already have HPV and don’t know it, how would vaccination still help protect me against different types of the virus?
